Hula Bed FAQs
What makes the Hula Bed unique?
The Hula Bed is constructed three unique foam blends in four separate layers:
- The Hula Bed features 2” of coconut polyol based foam in the top comfort layer. This provides a super soft and comfy sleep surface.
- The second layer consists of 2” of high quality Viscoelastic Memory foam to provide contouring support and pressure relief.
- Two separate layers of support foam perfectly compliment the two ultra soft comfort layers. The third layer (2”) provides extra support to prevent sinking into the mattress while allowing you to enjoy the ultra soft sleep surface.
- The base foam layer (4”) provides additional support and the perfect finishing touch to the ultimate mattress.
How does the 30 Day Comfort Guarantee work?
It’s straightforward and simple. You have 30 days to try the mattress to confirm that it’s the perfect mattress for you. If you decide the Hula Bed isn’t for you contact us at support@hulabed.com and we’ll arrange a pickup. We’ll send a courier to your home to pick up the mattress and donate it to a local charity or recycling center (depending on local restrictions). You’ll receive a 100% refund.
The 30 day guarantee does not apply to the Hula Pillow.
How does the Hula Bed feel?
We’ve engineered to Hula Bed to hit that sweet spot between luxurious comfort and firm support. You’ll enjoy an ultra plush sleep surface but with a specially designed, firm base for ultra support. Simply said, if you like a soft bed, you’ll love it! If you’re the type that prefers the floor over a bad mattress – you’ll love it too!
Do I need a box spring or platform?
We’ve tested the Hula Bed on everything from the floor to a box spring. It’s designed to work on any firm, flat surface but the more surface area the better. If you use a slatted platform, be sure that the slats are rigid and spaced no more than 3” apart. If you’ve got an old box spring with little support, you’ll need a sheet of plywood or similar rigid surface. Search the web, you’ll find a lot of cool and inexpensive ideas!
Why does the Hula Bed cost so much less than luxury mattresses from a retail store?
Our business model is simple and fair. We’ve developed a high quality mattress and sell it at a fair price point, without the huge retail margins. We also don’t waste money on retail stores, overblown ad campaigns or carry excessive inventory. The Hula Bed is made in California, USA and shipped directly to your house. No middle men, no wasted transport costs – simply put – it’s a great deal!
Does the foam have an unpleasant smell?
As with any new product, there is a chance of a mild scent when unboxing your Hula Bed. The TENCEL® cover provides a sleep surface made from natural and sustainable materials while the coconut foam comfort layer has a coconut essence added to give it a soothing and pleasant scent to highlight its features.
What kind of material is the Hula Bed made from?
It starts with the TENCEL® cover which provides a soft, smooth sleep surface. Further, it prevents bacterial growth, is 70% more absorbent than cotton and made from natural and eco-friendly materials. We could’ve chosen a much cheaper alternative but we wanted to make the BEST mattress available online. The comfort layer, consisting of 2” of coconut foam, is our secret sauce! The coconut foam consists of 30% natural coconut polyol and is water blown to be respectful to the environment. It’s also 200% more breathable than conventional foams, providing a naturally cool sleep experience. It’s both soft and highly resilient, ensuring longevity. The second layer consists of 2” of viscoelastic memory foam to provide contouring support and pressure relief. The third layer consists of 2” of high density, high ILD (high firmness) support foam to provide the perfect transitional layer. It prevents that “sinking feeling” and provides unparalleled support for your body while allowing you to enjoy the luxurious comfort of the top two layers. The final layer consists of 4” of high density support foam for the perfect support base. Put it all together and you have the ultimate sleep experience.
Does it transfer movement?
The Hula Bed was designed for comfort and support. It provides far more motion isolation than a traditional spring mattress but by design it’s not the perfect cup holder. Simply put, if your partner is more than a few inches away, neither of you will rock the boat.
Tell me more about the Hula Bed.
The Hula Bed is the perfect mattress for everyone. That might sound like a bit of a stretch but it’s loved by the “softies” and the tough guys and gals that could sleep on the floor. It’s simply engineered to strike the perfect cord between comfort and support.
We also selected a cover and foams that sleep cool. This isn’t marketing fluff but rather technologies brought together to provide a cool to neutral sleep surface.
We’re sure you’re going to love it and offer a 30 Day Comfort Guarantee. To put it simply, if you don’t love it for any reason, we’ll send a courier to pick it up and refund your money 100%.
Our mattress was designed, manufactured and is produced in the USA. All of our materials were sourced in the USA with the exception of the coconut foam, which comes from Italy. The coconut foam is shipped to our manufacturing site in block form and cut to size in the good old USA. We’ve combined the best from the USA and luxury from Europe to create the perfect mattress.
Regardless of the size you choose, the Hula Bed is compressed, boxed and shipped directly to you.
I have sensitive skin, will the Hula Bed work for me?
The manufacturer of our TENCEL® cover states that based on documented and verifiable testing it may inhibit and lower the potential for growth of bacteria by not providing an environment for its growth and, without the addition of harmful chemicals. Further, they state that TENCEL® Fiber has been proven through numerous documented studies to improve sleep and comfort of those individuals who consider themselves to have sensitive skin or who suffer from dermatitis or eczema. We’ve completed no additional studies to verify these claims.
Does the Hula Bed irritate latex allergies?
It shouldn’t. We use no natural or synthetic latex foam in the Hula Bed. You might feel like you’re sleeping on the beach thanks to the comfy coconut foam but without the sand and sunburn. Also, the top two layers of the Hula Bed, the TENCEL® cover and coconut foam, are both Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified. This certification is only given to materials that meet stringent requirements for textiles used close to the skin.
How does the Hula Bed compare to traditional memory foam mattresses?
While traditional memory foam is popular and can provide great support, many feel that it sleeps too hot and is either too hard or creates a sinking feeling. We found that the coconut foam was a perfect complement to the supportive, comfortable and contouring foam used in the Hula Bed. The coconut foam provides a soft and luxurious sleep surface but is extremely breathable for a naturally cool night’s sleep. The coconut foam used in our top comfort layer is Tested Transpiring certified and is 200% more transpiring than conventional foams for a cool and breathable sleeping surface. In addition, the TENCEL® fabric cover provides outstanding moisture absorption due to its nano-fribil structure, resulting in natural cooling properties.
Will the Hula Bed create a valley like my old mattress?
The Hula Bed won’t sink or form annoying dents in the sleep surface. We offer a 10-year warranty and use only highly resilient and high density foams for long-term quality.
Does the Hula Bed resist dust mites?
The manufacturer of our TENCEL® cover cites studies that indicate that TENCEL® may reduce the growth of dust mites without chemical additives, but we’ve completed no studies to further research this issue.
Are there chemical fire retardants in the Hula Bed?
The Hula Bed does not contain any flame retardant chemicals. In fact, we took safety and comfort to another level via our TENCEL® cover. The Hula Bed cover features inherent flame-retardant yarn technology that is knitted into the back of the stretch knit fabric to provide a chemical free, safe, durable and everlasting protection unlike chemical options that can wear off, or wash out over time. This all-in-one technology provides better performance and breathability as compared to mattress designs that include a flame retardant sock and an additional cover. Multiple fabric layers = heat build-up. Also, our inherent flame-retardant yarn technology provides a high quality and comfortable alternative to flame-retardant socks that have a tendency to bunch up or crease under the cover in time. With the Hula Bed, there is no bunching thanks to a single comfort layer which ensures a flawlessly comfortable sleep surface.
What certifications does the Hula Bed have?
All of the foams and fabrics used in the Hula Bed have environmental certifications that ensure that they are safe and non-toxic.
- Our TENCEL® cover is Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified ensuring it safe for contact with the skin. It’s also PEFC certified ensuring that the natural wood/pulp used for fabric production comes from sustainably managed sources. Further, it is FSC certified which proves that wood is derived from responsibly managed forests.
- Our coconut foam comfort layer is also Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certified ensuring it safe for contact with the skin. It’s also CATAS certified for durability and certified Tested Transpiring for air-permeability.

CertiPUR-US approved foams are: made without ozone depleters; Made without PBDE flame retardant; Made without mercury, lead and other heavy metals; Made without formaldehyde; Made without phalates regulated by the Consumer Products Safety Commission; Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million).
